Replacing the proprietary music with open source
Hi folks,
I was browsing the music in our git repo, and I noticed that it's all CC BY-NC-SA licensed, which is a non-free and non-open licence. That seems a bit strange given we are otherwise committed to free and open licensing.
OpenGameArt has quite an extensive collection of music. I'm not sure what kind of thing you're after - how close to the "Gameboy sound" to you want to remain?
There are a few collections of JRPG/8-bit compositions that could be good:
http://opengameart.org/content/jrpg-collection
http://opengameart.org/content/jrpg-collection-2
http://opengameart.org/content/generic- … soundtrack
Or if we're accepting stuff that's a bit further afield, this battle track sounds great:
http://opengameart.org/content/rpg-batt … ncounter-0 (he has a whole bunch of music under CC BY, but it looks like he has some quite specific requests for how he's credited: http://www.matthewpablo.com/services )
And this one seems pretty good:

EDIT: And there's often a music folder in the Superpowers asset packs: https://github.com/sparklinlabs/superpowers-asset-packs

Lead Developer · 374 commentsThere's some pretty good tracks in these music packs. I completely agree that we should move towards removing any CC BY-NC-SA content. I was thinking of also trying to contact the artists for the existing music to see if they'd be willing to release it under CC BY-SA. If they're unwilling to do so, we should remove those tracks from the project.

Champion · 295 commentsI was wondering, is there any way we could make it so that you can set the music for a battle or encounter in the db file? It would be cool if different regions and battles could have different sound tracks.

sounds good to me
this would open a few new possibilities:
- since every campaign has their own db, different campaigns could have different soundtracks
- we could change the battle soundtrack by events
- - example for this is what joseph already said: different region, different battle theme
- - a different campaign might change the battle theme once the story advanced, some jrpgs do that
But somewhere fixed (maybe the current position; res/music) should be a fall-back-soundtrack, in case something bad happens (aka can't load the file), like in the translations (no chinese translation? okay, get the english one instead)
Im gonna put a "enhancement" issue on github
Edit: Can't put a label there myself haha
here's the issue: https://github.com/Tuxemon/Tuxemon/issues/124
feel free to comment if I misunderstood something; also feel free to edit the issue name if you find better words to describe the idea
thank you!

Please add to it - either new tracks we could use, or new thoughts on how we could use existing tracks.

Champion · 295 commentsThis site lets you randomly generate CC0 music tracks - but most don't sound very good; I just thought you guys might be able to use it somehow.

Enjoy, it's pretty cool!

I can imagine this track in some kind of shop... it sounds like a track you could use for a little minigame probably
