SPRINT 2! Getting the Trainer Sprites Done
The Monster Sprint has been a big success! We're up to 100 tuxemon that belong to complete families, and there's just 11 more that are crucial to the story that we need to get done.
So this seemed like a good opportunity to kick off the Trainer sprint.
Trainers all need their overland sprites - 16px wide by about 20px high (up to 24px), or 16px high for children. If they're stationary, they only need one forward-facing, one back-facing, one left-facing and one right-facing sprite. If they're going to walk (including anyone that'll battle the protagonist), they'll need an extra two for each direction.
Trainers that'll battle the protagonist also need a battle sprite - a 64 by 64 pixel sprite, facing forward and a little to the player's left (just like monster sprites).
There's also some that are mostly done, so if you don't have a lot of time, they'd be good choices to work on.

- CEO: Battle sprite not done yet.
- Postboy: Overland sprites need to be completed (it's not the right colour).
- Magician: Overland sprites need to be completed.
- Pirate: Battle sprite not done yet (there is one, but it doesn't match the style).

Champion · 550 commentsHi josepharaoh99, I did make that character sprite
Thanks for the kind words!
I'm making a template for people to be able to select a character's hat, hair, skin colour, clothes and eyes. You can see where I'm at here: http://opengameart.org/forumtopic/im-ma … e-guidance
I'd love to know what everyone thinks!

I changed the colours to match the main sprite.
I didn't mean to make the CEO so short - I just measured wrong.
He's a bit taller now:

Champion · 550 commentsHere's the faces of some of our trainers, to show the range of skin and hair tones our default palette supports:
I'm going to make a conscious effort to represent a greater variety of skin tones in the trainer sprites that I make.
Here's a couple of sprites where I used the skin colour palette of a different sprite. I think they look pretty solid:
Here's a number of skin tone options.

Champion · 295 commentsQuick idea - for dialog, what if we added an option to put a face sprite on the dialog box to help show who's talking? Just an idea...

I think this would be a neat idea to implement! We just would need to make sure we have enough face sprites for the various NPCs you find in the game.

That leaves just one more trainer that's necessary for the plot! (The Shaft Boss)

Yeah!
So Shaft is a mining company, so something to do with mining - a miner, a geologist, an operator of heavy machinery, a surveyor, etc. Alternatively, it could be someone who is clearly in management and out-of-place on an actual work site - like someone in a suit uncomfortably wearing a hard hat (or holding it, trying to avoid putting it on, etc.).
There's also more male Bosses than female so far, so a female Boss could be good - but there's no fixed requirement for that.
Here's the miners that the Shaft Boss will be in charge of:

Champion · 261 commentsHey, i just came home and made this little scribble:
I think I tend to oversexualize female characters - and that happens way too much in our society. so I went and made a large woman... I threw some basic colors on her. To differ from the others, she needs similar but different clothes. Before I go on with something like that: Should the shaft boss be a large woman with mining clothes?
Edit: Yup I didn't even give her any hair yet if you would like to see her in game, I can finish her design...

Will do!
I have a question regarding "more important characters": Should we probably think of some kind of personality for important characters, or is it too early for that (the story isn't that fixed right now)?

Champion · 261 commentsHere she is again!
I was asking about the personality thing because it influences the character design. To me, she is...
- ... a hard worker (probably even a bit of a workaholic)
- ... honest with herself
- ... appreciated
- ... strict to herself and to others
- ... a role model for her workers
- ... naive - fighting for a greater good, not understanding that the steps she is taking might have the opposite effect

Champion · 550 commentsLove it, tamashi - I've added her to the wiki.
In terms of personality, yeah I think it wouldn't hurt! The main thing would be that the personality should be clear from a few lines of dialogue, since that's all that most characters will probably get.

That's right - but she's not the only person who will talk. As you aproach her, you will face her workers.. and they might loose a few lines about her. Something like...
"If you want to continue, you have to pass me!"
- you defeat the worker -
"What a loss!"
- when you talk to him after the fight -
"I hope Boss is not mad - she gets angry so fast..."
"But she is a nice person and has a heart like a diamond." (oh god... mineworker jokes...)
Probably someone else might say
"I will train more and become as strong as our Boss."
"She worked so hard to become the leader, I wanna be like her someday."
Or so...
Something I liked in Pokemon Firered was the device, which sorted quotes of characters to specific persons, so if someone talked about a gym leader, you had that line in your device and could read it again.
