Creature storage system

Hey everyone, this is my first post here.  I have been contributing to the codebase for a few weeks now, and I had an idea the other day that addresses one of the issues on the github page.  I figured that I would post the idea here, since it seems like a better place for discussion.  Anyway, the idea relates to creature storage, found here: https://github.com/Tuxemon/Tuxemon/issues/3

I think it would be interesting to have a gradual increase in usefulness for creature storage, to make the game story more interesting.  Starting from a simple 'battle chest' (or whatever), the storage could be eventually upgraded to a point where creatures are instantly transfered.

I thought that a cute gimmick would be to use an autonomous drone delivery system.  The player could have an upgraded system that will send a message to a drone, which will then deliver the creature to the player (or pick up an unneeded one).  In-game, there could be a cheeky menu that looks like a smart phone app, and a short animation will play when the drone picks up or drops off creatures.  Even calling the drone "Amazin", or "Emazon" would be cheeky (typical anime often slightly copies well-known brands).

To shoehorn the drone into the plot, there could be places where the drone communication device cannot work, or a villain disables it, or hacks it to steal a story related creature (and the quest goal is to rescue it).

So, just to start a discussion, here is what I had in mind.  Of course, it is open to suggestion.  This is an outline for example storage types.  Each level is upgraded with game credits, quest awards, community gifts, etc.

1: First storage is just at the players home
2: Enchanted chests allow storage at select places (chests are linked)
3: Drone delivery every few game hours, drop off or pick up only
4: Drone delivery and pickup at once
5: Specialty drop off/pick up points, like a training area to level up creatures in background
6: Upgrade the drone to be a shop.  Buy or sell a few items with a high markup.
7: Space satellite can beam up or down creatures/items without delay

Thanks!  I'm looking forward to hear everyone's ideas.

I think there are some great ideas with the drone system that you spoke about here.

  • Selling/buying items remotely
  • Sending monster to swap with another you just caught
  • Specialty drop off/pick up points, like a training area to level up creatures in background

Your first point on storage only being in the players home would be a punishing change. If you didn't remember to bring this specific person with you, or if you didn't remember to leave a spot open to catch this monster you have to spend x amount of time to go and get it etc.

The only point about the creature storage in the player's home is that it would be the first option the player has.  Eventually, the player can upgrade it to the drone or linked chests.  The list I made is a progression of sorts.  Each item is a upgrade from the previous storage type.

I also really like the drone idea. It would be great to see a drone animation fly away and minutes later comes back with a creature from storage. Maybe a little music jingle as it arrives? I think I agree with Berosk though in that the first level does seem pretty punishing to the player, even in the beginning of the game. Maybe the "enchanted chests" storage would be a better first level?
