I've noticed that whenever I get on the IRC, no one is on. I'm always alone. Wouldn't it make more sense to have something like a discord that saves messages for other people to see? Instead of an IRC where the previous messages cannot be seen by new users unless they stay logged in.
I'm not a big user of IRC or Discord, although I probably would check Discord from time to time if we had one for Tuxemon.
Would another option be to just have a general chat thread on the forums? I wouldn't mind if it had many low-effort posts in it - but perhaps others would prefer to keep the forums a bit more focused (or are there other benefits of IRC/Discord that the forum doesn't have?)
We could create a thread in the off-topic forum... but I don't know if that would be annoying for some people. When I log in to this site, i usually check the newest activity with the "recent activity" thing which is on the left side. Someone, who's not very active in the chat would always have to see that someone made a possibly-not-productive post in there and had to ignore it.
We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when. But I know we'll meet again some sunny day!
If ShadowApex or Leif are browsing the forum, I'd appreciate your input.

With Discord, we'd still be able to have separate channels (#writing, #programming, #map-development, #general, #help, and others), but everyone would be able to see the messages, which sets it apart from IRC. Unlike a Forum, the responses are fast and in real-time.
I believe that the Forums still have a use for general announcements, but from a development standpoint, it would be better to have a faster, more direct communication like discord.
Some negative point is, that people might not want to register to use Discord. I was like that for a long time ...Edit: But the Voice Chat is nice

I really hate the discord client, tbh. I rarely use it. Too chaotic, slow, and has so many annoying notifications. I prefer the simple IRC interface. My Irc client is generally always open, but as of late I am not at my computer much. The tuxemon community is still very small; I don't see any advantage for sub-channels (from discord).
For me, I am fine with the forums for most communication. I occasionally do prefer real-time chat, and IRC has always handled that well for me.

I do use Discord from time to time and am usually on both IRC and Discord. It has a few things that I like about it, so I went ahead and created an official Tuxemon Discord channel here:https://discord.gg/3ZffZwz
I'll try and update the website and repository with the Discord link for anyone else who might want to join.
